THE CITY

A town with many surprises at a short distance from Rome

Its polygonal walls dating back to the third/fourth century BC, testify to the past grandeur of Amelia, one of the most ancient towns in Italy. Besides the Cathedral and the civic tower you can admire splendid Renaissance palaces in the historic center, one of  which, Palazzo Farrattini, inspired Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Among the illustrious citizens, we mention Bishop Alessandro Geraldini, who interceded with the Spanish Queen Isabel asking her to finance the legendary journey of Columbus, thus becoming the first bishop of the New World.
