THE CITY

The village of the Dolce Vineyards

It deserves the description as the"balcony of  Umbria" for its exceptional panoramic position overlooking the Umbrian Valley.

For art lovers there is an absolute highlight in the deconsecrated church of St. Francis: the three-register fresco cycle depicting the Life of St. Francis, painted by the great Florentine master Benozzo Gozzoli.

When Hermann Hesse visited Montefalco in 1907 he wrote about "a bottle of old wine that we all drank together". Might he have been the first traveler to appreciate the now famous Sagrantino Passito? We are in fact in the right place for this sweet dessert wine. Its name is now indissolubly linked to an extraordinary red wine, made with a native grape variety which has been given a DOCG denomination.
